About Richard H. Saxl

Lawyers seem to fall into two categories: those who like their job and those who don’t. I like my job. I believe I can help people solve their legal problems. My philosophy is based on the view that a lawyer’s success depends on results, referrals and repeat business. I do my best to obtain a satisfactory result for each client’s legal problems as quickly and inexpensively as possible. It’s as simple as that.

On a personal level, I’m happily married. I have two grown children who are married and raising children of their own. I’m high energy but low key. Perhaps that’s an odd combination, but that’s me.

I earned my undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where I graduated early. In law school at Rutgers University, I won my moot court jury trial against the class valedictorian. I’ve been privileged to practice law in the Westport area since I was admitted to the Bar.

Town Plan And Zoning Commission

I served for 12 years on the Fairfield Town Plan and Zoning Commission and served on two Charter Revision commissions. I chaired the initial Land Acquisition Committee, where I drafted legislation enabling Fairfield to acquire over 100 acres of land, most of which was open space. I also had the pleasure and distinction of serving Fairfield as its town attorney for a dozen years.

My clients come from all over Fairfield County, including Westport; Weston; Fairfield; Easton; Redding; Trumbull; Darien; New Canaan; Norwalk; Stamford and Greenwich. I’ve represented several noteworthy and famous clients. I’ve also helped clients who had nowhere else to turn.

I Teach Other Lawyers

Frankly, I’m good at my job. I’ve won cases in the Connecticut Superior Courts, the Connecticut Appellate Court and the Connecticut Supreme Court. Some of my land use cases resulted in landmark decisions benefiting my clients. I have written and presented more than a dozen seminars aimed at helping other lawyers hone their skills on estate planning, probate and probate litigation.

I have taught Probate Administration at Fairfield University and have been a speaker at Connecticut Bar Association meetings as well as other groups. I’ve served as a judge in law school moot court competitions; sat as a magistrate for the Connecticut Superior Court; and have been a member of the board of directors of the Connecticut Association of Municipal Attorneys. I authored Connecticut Estates Simplified: Planning, Probate and Taxes. The latest version of this work is 100 pages; the first version was an eight-page pamphlet published in 1994.

“Super Lawyers”

For a half dozen years, including 2019, I have been selected for inclusion to the Connecticut Super Lawyers list, an honor reserved for lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.*

AV Rated And “Preeminent Lawyer”

I have been designated as a Preeminent Lawyer and have attained an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell. This is the highest rating given for legal ability and for ethical standards from this century old peer review rating system, which is based on written evaluations from judges and other lawyers.**

One judge writing about me to Martindale-Hubbell said “He was the best town attorney that appeared in front of me.” I have received a Lifetime Achievement award from Marquis Who’s Who as someone who has demonstrated “unwavering excellence” in my field ***
